My Work Experience Passport
Barclay Medical Practice · A Week of Discovery
Hello and welcome!
We are so pleased you're joining us at Barclay Medical Practice. We look after over 130,000 patients across Glasgow and Lothian — and over your placement, you'll get to see how all sorts of different jobs come together to look after people.
Your supervisor will use the Induction Pack to plan your placement day by day, and it might not go in the same order every time — that's completely normal, as it depends on what's happening in the Practice. This passport has a page for each area you might spend time in. Whichever one you're in, open that page: you'll find things to look out for, something to try, and a quick quiz. When you're done, you can print any page to keep a copy of what you did.
What we ask of you during your placement
Respect
Be kind and polite to everyone you meet.
Compassion
Remember every patient has their own story.
Teamwork
Every single job here matters.
Professionalism
Represent yourself & the Practice well.
Confidentiality
What you see and hear here, stays here.
Who works at the Practice?
You'll meet lots of different people during your placement — tap a role to find out what they do:
- GPs — Doctors who see patients, work out what's wrong, and decide on treatment or refer them to a specialist.
- GP Registrars — Fully qualified doctors training to become GPs, working under supervision.
- Advanced Nurse Practitioners — Senior, highly trained nurses who can assess, diagnose and treat patients, similar to a GP.
- Practice Nurses — Run clinics including Chronic Disease Management (CDM) and sexual health services, as well as vaccinations, wound care and health checks.
- Healthcare Support Workers — Support clinical staff with tasks like taking blood pressure and helping patients feel comfortable.
- Pharmacists — Experts in medicines who check prescriptions are safe and give advice.
- Pharmacy Technicians — Support pharmacists with preparing, checking and issuing medicines.
- Mental Health Practitioners — Support patients with their mental health and emotional wellbeing.
- Care Navigators — Help patients find the right person or service for what they need.
- Administration Team — Keep records, letters and everyday paperwork organised.
- Managers — Oversee how the Practice runs day to day.
Confidentiality
This week you might hear patients' names, hear about their health, or overhear a conversation between staff. This is private information, and it must stay inside the Practice — that means not telling friends, family, or posting about it online, even after your placement finishes.
- Never take photos inside the Practice.
- Never post about patients or staff on social media.
- Always wear your visitor badge.
- If you're ever worried about something you've seen, tell your supervisor straight away.
